The Ahwatukee Meteor

Ahwatukee is a quiet little corner of Phoenix, Arizona, nestled between the south side of South Mountain and the Gila River Indian Community.

At approximately 9:30 PM on Friday, February 3rd, 2017, that quietness was broken by a loud explosion and burst of light in the sky that could be seen and heard from Elliot to Pecos Roads, from I-10 to the Foothills. In other words, the entirety of Ahwatukee.

Lights went out, ceiling fans came on, dogs barked, and residents were startled. There were no reports of any injury or property damage, but it sure woke everyone up!

Near as anyone could figure, Ahwatukee had just dodged a meteor. It makes one reflect on the vastness and power of our galaxy and the frailness and unpredictability of life. Here is footage of what a meteor looks like as it enters the atmosphere and (hopefully) breaks up.
